Accursed Lands Wiki

Accursed Lands does not have a "teach" command. Many players request such a command.  They'd like to have their character pick up tips from an experienced teacher.  This would shortcut the tedious practice sessions that many players use to increase their skill level. Some think that a teach command would be a natural and realistic addition to Accursed Lands' set of features.  After all, they reason, who wants to spend all day practicing whittling just to be able to make some utilitarian items; it would be better if our characters could pick up skill by associating with a willing instructor.

However, AL is designed to encourage players to interact through roleplay, rather than by automatic teaching commands.  The roleplayed interaction between an experienced character and a novice is much more valuable to us than an automated system of skill advancement that would reduce two or more players to mere spectators while the MUD code took over the work of shaping a character.

Don't view skill advancement as the simple acquisition of knowledge.  For your character, learning is more than just memorizing facts.  An increase in skill level represents many things: crafters gain a greater degree of dexterity with their tools, athletes and fighters hone their reflexes and strength, linguists pick up a feel for a language's subtleties, and magi develop intuition and senses they didn't even realize they had.

None of these important yet intangible qualities can be taught.  They have to be developed by training, repetition, and sheer force of will.  Teachers can impart knowledge and guide their pupils along the path to success, but there is no substitute for hard work.  Your character can watch a master swordswoman slay dozens of ferocious bears, and listen as she talks about all the tricks and techniques of hunting and combat, but your character won't be able to duplicate the expert's feats without starting at the beginning and working towards the goal.

A teacher can lead you, reduce your missteps, and show you how to avoid mistakes, but a teacher can not train your mind and body to understand a skill on a visceral, intuitive level. Teachers are an indispensable part of Accursed Lands, but they teach through roleplay rather than through artificial, automated commands. Who wants to master a skill, the player or the character?  Your character's journey is more important than its eventual destination.
