SYNTAX:

mail
mail <user>

Mail is a great way to send messages to other players and creators when they're not online or are otherwise unavailable. To use the mail system, you must be in a post office.  You should check the post office regularly to get any new messages that may be waiting for you--mail is not delivered directly to you, and you are not alerted to new mail except during login. To check your mail, enter a post office and type 'mail'.  Any unread messages that you may have will be listed and numbered. To read a particular message, type the number of the message. Pressing enter without providing any other input will read the first unread message. To check any old messages that you have read in the past, type 'h'.  This will list the header information for all of the messages you have in your box, new and old.  You can also list a range of posts (by number) or list all posts from a given author.

For example 'h 2, 4, 6-9' would display the headers for your second, fourth, six, seventh, eighth, and ninth messages, while 'h lathander' would display the headers for all messages sent to you by Lathander. Header information consists of the index number, sender, date, and message title. To delete messages, type 'd #' where # is the index number of the message you want to delete, or a range of numbers as described above. To send mail, type 'm foo' where foo is the name of the person you want to send the message to.  Currently, the mail system does not support character names--you must use the OOC account name of the person.

If you have trouble keeping all this straight, brief syntax for all available mail commands can be obtained by typing a question mark at the mail prompt. To exit the mail system, type 'q', or simply press enter if you have no unread messages.

Disclaimer:  There are no private mail facilities, as defined by the appropriate US laws, on this system.  The management reserves the right to read anything, but we're far too busy to do so unless occasion arises.  If we happen to catch you doing anything illegal, we WILL forward any evidence to the proper authorities.

Regarding IC and OOC separation:  The current mailing system is almost entirely stock, which is to say, it was not defined with the needs of this particular MUD in mind. Eventually, separate mailing systems will be used for IC and OOC mail.  Until then, you may treat mail as IC or OOC at your discretion, and on a case-by-case basis.

It is important to note that whereas messages can be either IC or OOC in content, they should not be both. For the sake of convenience, however, it is acceptable to use OOC dates in IC messages (e.g. for planning upcoming events).
